As a journalist and a marketer sadly I’m not a fan of this. There is a well established writer on this platform that solicits money for a personal cause. I’m deeply empathetic and I’ve gone through a divorce where I lost everything and was uninsured. I also was hospitalized multiple times for blood clots while having no insurance. As a journalist we are taught we have a responsibility to the reader. When I watch this writer who also makes six figures solicit money from caring readers it worries me about other writers who may try and do this when they see how much money she’s raised. There are platforms for raising money and they’re great. That’s where I think they should raise money. The coffee thing is an innocent addition that wouldn’t be a bad idea but I worry watching that particular writer that people may start using this platform not as it’s intended to write and share great stories but to jeopardize the integrity of writing. In other words not a bad idea but that writer ruined it for me. Especially since she’s a 6 figure writer and I was self-employed and had that same income and paid insurance for a family of five. It’s a fine line.
