Hi Thomas, I agree honesty is the way to go. I do know someone who's children were in college when she met a man with sole custody of two little guys. It was an adjustment since he had his children all of the time and she was ready to be an empty nester. I think at the time she was in her late 40's but emotionally her kids were raised. They ended up making it work by her moving out and into her own place and they are extremely happy still today.
