I agree that labels are overused and that serious personality disorders should be diagnosed. However, this is an extremely complex disorder and the statistical numbers are not necessarily accurate. Why? Because narcissists don't seek treatment, the lack of empathy prevents them from believing there is anything wrong with them. For this reason, they are often diagnosed by secondary means such as marriage counseling, addiction treatment, etc. Therefore, the belief is the number of those who have Narcissistic personality disorder is much higher than recorded. It's just another reason why you are correct about people needing to understand this disorder and not just write about it because they had a bad relationship and assume they are with a narcissist.
