I Didn’t Know I Was Dating a Narcissist

That’s what makes it even more frightening

I walked the streets of Scranton, Pennsylvania during my college years. A town as quirky as the television show The Office portrays it. One night, my then-boyfriend and I were approaching a corner.

He suddenly pushed me to the left of him.

It didn’t register with me at first because it was dark. But as we inched a few steps forward I caught sight of a rather daunting-looking Doberman.

“Oh my gosh,” I say. “You pushed me into the path of the scary-looking dog so you wouldn’t have to walk by him.”

“Yes,” he says laughing.

Clearly, to some, this would be a troubling red flag.

But here’s the thing. From the time I was fourteen years old and throughout my college years, I worked at a kennel associated with a veterinary hospital. I am fearless when it comes to animals. I also realize many of the breeds that get a bad rap are actually gentle.

My boyfriend knew this about me.

Was I aggravated? Yes.

But I also found it humorous.
