A friend asked if I would help start their nonprofit.

I jumped at the chance even though it was unpaid. In the long run, it would help solidify my future. Not to mention, this country’s foundation was built upon women tirelessly working behind the scenes.

Think Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross.

It was crazy in the beginning. We were completely overwhelmed. We totally didn’t know what we were doing. But we were invested, all in.

And there were these moments of ridiculous joy and satisfaction.

It was so rewarding.

I didn’t have a job description but I was sort of like a Girl Friday.

The daily tasks varied as did the demands. I needed to be a self-starter, team player, problem-solver, and multi-tasker. No project was too big or too small.

There were people depending on us.

I thrived in the chaos.

One day I’d be planning a fundraiser for sick children, another writing copy for a brochure, getting press for a worthy cause, or getting business donations to fund our operations.
