I Lost My Wedding Band

It felt like even the world was saying marriage over

I’m sitting at a light.

It’s summer, the heat swells my fingers and makes my thick gold wedding band uncomfortable. I take it off and place it in the coin-filled ashtray.

I see a work van soaring towards me.

It happens so quickly there is no time for fear.

The impact sends me into the intersection. I brace for the oncoming traffic but there isn’t any. I am filled with gratitude because thankfully it’s a sleepy time of day for this particular spot.

I collect myself, talk to the guys who hit me, and go home.

I realize I have left my wedding band in the car and go to retrieve it.

Oddly, the coins remain but my ring is gone.

I can’t make sense of this. The impact was significant. Yet, the currency did not move. How is that possible?

When my husband and I were planning our wedding, I ordered a diamond band.

Weeks before our day, the jeweler told us it wouldn’t be finished in time.

I was devastated.

Instead, I chose a thick gold band. One which resembled the one my mom had worn. I wore it on my left hand and my…
