I think what’s important to help distinguish this is what is your expectation? I always tell people if you want to self-publish do it for yourself and be aware of what these publishers promise you. They tend to tell the same few stories of a few successful books but not the backstory to how that was accomplished. I have many friends even one who had a million followers who were disappointed because they ended up not selling many copies because the business side of writing is about channels of distribution and it isn’t always easy to get self-published books into stores or get substantial PR for them. When people have asked my advice over the years I tended to warn them not to necessarily believe subsidy/vanity publishers who will tell them anything they want yo hear about their book to get their money and to do it for themselves and understand the true facts and statistics behind self-publishing so they aren’t taken advantage of or disappointed.
