“I was stupid,” I say.

“No, you weren’t stupid,” says my friend. “You were trusting.”

I love my friend for trying to make me feel better. She’s half right. I was trusting. But let’s face it. Those who were on the receiving end of years of lies, know better.

Trust is a synonym for stupidity. At least when held in the wrong heart and hands. One naive being places their head on the pillow each evening. And one soul-less cheat unapologetically snuggles next to them.

In my case it was money.

Lots of it, hidden for years while I struggled to save a marriage.

For others, it’s another man or another woman. Although who knows? What I once believed impossible, could have happened. The good Catholic guy I met in college ignored a few commandments to embezzle our life savings.

There could have been an affair hidden along with the assets.

If he justified stealing every cent, he could’ve justified that.

I was in love with a spousal con artist. I may never know all of the facts, just some clues. The P.O. Box key I found one day, the co-worker who slipped up and blurted out something they shouldn’t have, his relative who…
