Santa Forgot My 7-Year-Old Wish

And I’m still waiting for it

Not every Christmas is Candy Canes and twinkle lights.

I’m not talking about the year Santa forgot my Easy Bake Oven and Barbie’s Country Camper. I knew my Santa was a procrastinating shopper. No biggie.

Or the time I ‘fell asleep’ and Santa wheeled a bike past me and had to tell one of his helpers it was ‘used.’ I understood. My Santa worked hard and there was no Mrs. Claus to help.

But my 7-year-old wish?

That’s a problem I’m still waiting for Santa to fix.

Every year I would climb onto our living room sofa with eternal optimism. This dreamer and believer would gaze through the window and nothing, nada.

No pony in the front yard.

You might think I’m kidding.

The not getting over it part.

A man asked me out on a date a few years into my never-ending divorce. I knew the guy. He is handsome, sweet, and successful. Even I couldn’t believe I said no. I just wasn’t ready.

I was still overwhelmed by my inability to escape another man.

Instead of focusing on how great a guy he was…
