This Is What Our First Marriage Counselor Said
A thought for stay-at-home mothers
We are sitting in our first marriage counselor’s office. He instructs us to have a conversation about a recent conflict. He observes and asks us to discuss another bone of contention.
“Ralph,” says the counselor. “It’s not the 1950s anymore. We’re smarter now. We understand it’s hard work to stay at home and raise children.”
At that moment, the heavens parted, and angels sang. At least for me. Ralph (name changed to protect the guilty) didn’t hear a thing. Not the counselor or the angels.
“She wanted me to take the day off because she was sick,” says Ralph.
“That’s not what Colleen said,” answered the counselor. “She said she got through the day despite being sick. She was upset by your actions when you returned home. You walked past her and spent the evening watching television in the basement.”
